MOCHITSUKI
December 8–9, 2023
Mochtsuki is one of the three seasonal time commitments and one of the only two community center support commitments. It is imperative that we give our time to the Eden community Center in this way. We support he center yearly at this time in making mochi that is then sold to the community in preparation for the New Year.
Mochi or rice cake is essential to the Oshogatsu or New years’s celebration The pounding of steamed mochigome or sweet glutinous rice to make mochi is called mochitsuki. In earlier times, both in Japan and within the Japanese-American community, friends and family would gather together to pound the New year’s mochi.
Mochitsuki is an all day event, which reqiuures many hands, long hours, and physical labor, but it is also a time of fellowship and socializing. This is part of our community service for the benefit of the Issei and Nisei in our community, requiring all of our members to participate in it.
